On August 2, 2024, the government of New South Wales, Australia promulgated mandatory regulations to implement strict new standards for electric mobile devices powered by lithium-ion batteries (such as electric bicycles and electric scooters), which will be enforced in February 2025. These new standards aim to enhance consumer safety by reducing the risk of fire caused by these products.

The contents of the new standard are as follows:

Battery standard

1. Electric bicycle battery

◆ EN 50604-1:2016+A1:2021: Standard for secondary lithium batteries for light electric vehicles.

◆ IEC 62133-2:2017: specifies the safety requirements for secondary batteries and portable sealed secondary batteries containing alkaline or other non-acidic electrolytes, with special attention to lithium systems.

◆ UL 2271: Standard for batteries used in light electric vehicle (LEV) applications.

2. Electric scooters, electric skateboards and suspended plate batteries

◆ AS/NZS 60335.2.114:2023: Part 2.114 of the Safety Standard for Household and Similar Electrical Appliances, especially for the specific requirements of personal electric vehicles.

◆ UL 2271: It is also suitable for batteries used in LEV applications.

Product standard

1. Electric bicycles

For electric bicycles with a maximum continuous rated output not exceeding 500 watts:

★ AS 15194:2016 and EN 15194:2017+A1:2023: Standards for electric assisted bicycles (EPAC).

★ UL 2849: Electrical system for electric bicycles. For electric bicycles with a maximum continuous rated output exceeding 500 watts:

★ UL 2849: It is also applicable to its electrical system.

2. Electric scooters, electric skateboards and suspension boards

★ AS/NZS 60335.2.114:2023: As mentioned above, it is aimed at the specific requirements of personal electric vehicles.

★ EN 17128: Standard for light motor vehicles and related facilities used for transporting people and goods, especially for personal light electric vehicles (PLEC) that do not need to obtain road use type approval.

★ UL 2272: Electrical system for personal electric mobile equipment.
