On March 20, 2023, the Korean Institute of Technology and Standards (KATS) issued a new announcement 2023-0027, officially implementing the new standard for energy storage batteries, KC 62619. This standard takes effect immediately from the date of publication, while the old version of KC 62619 standard will be abolished one year after the effective date of the announcement.

Compared to the 2019 version of KC 62619, the main changes in the new version of the standard are:

● Alignment of terminology definitions and international standards;

● The scope of application has been expanded, and mobile energy storage devices have been included in the control, making it more clear that portable outdoor energy storage power supplies are also within the scope; The scope of application is modified to be between 500kWh and 300kWh;

● Chapter 5.6.2 supplements the requirements for battery system design;

● Add requirements for system locks;

● Add EMC requirements;

● Add a heat spread test program that is out of control through laser contact heating.

Compared to the international standard IEC 62619:2022, the differences between the new version of KC 62619 are as follows:

1. Coverage

◆ In international standards, the scope of application is industrial batteries;

◆ KC 62619:2022 specifies that its scope is applicable to energy storage batteries, and specifies that mobile/fixed energy storage batteries, camping power supplies, and mobile electric vehicle chargers belong to the standard scope.

2. Sample quantity requirements

◆ In Clause 6.2, the IEC standard requires a sample quantity of R (R is 1 or more);

In the new version of KC 62619, three samples are required for each test of the battery cell, and one sample is required for the battery system.

3. Appendix E has been added to the new version of KC 62619, detailing the evaluation method for battery systems below 5kWh.
