On September 3, 2021, the European Electrotechnical Standardization Committee issued the first revised version of the standard EN 62133-2:2017, which is equivalent to IEC 62133-2:2017/AMD1:2021 issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission. According to the plan published by the European Electrotechnical Standardization Committee, the revised requirements in EN 62133-2:2017/A1:2021 have been enforced in Europe since August 19, 2024, and the standard EN 62133-2: 2017 without considering the revised requirements will not be accepted.

Test update in revision:

-Pre-treatment of high and low temperature charging: the time for holding heat at high and low temperatures is revised from 1h and 4h (1 1h and 4h) to 1h to 4h (1h to 4h), and the charging mode is revised from constant voltage charging to constant current charging first and then constant voltage charging.

-Squeeze test: Deleted the description of charging at the upper limit temperature.

-Overcharge test: the requirement is changed from "charging for longer than the time specified by the manufacturer should not cause fire or explosion" to "If the battery contains a battery overcharge protection circuit, it should be able to protect the battery from fire or explosion".

-Forced internal short-circuit test: the test environment temperature was changed from the original 45 C/10 C to the upper/lower charging temperature declared by the manufacturer.

-Appendix F: For the components on which battery safety depends, it is clear that the applicable evaluation standards are not limited to IEC standards, but also include regional component standards.

About IEC62133-2

IEC62133-2 is the most widely used safety standard for lithium batteries in the world. This specification mainly aims at the safety requirements of single batteries and batteries containing alkaline or non-acidic electrolyte and portable sealed single batteries and batteries. In the EU CE certification system, the requirements of EN62368-2 for secondary batteries are explicitly mentioned in Appendix M (Equipment Containers Batteries and Their Protection Circuits). Therefore, when a consumer electronic product containing a lithium battery applies for CE, the lithium battery must meet the requirements of IEC62133 standard, which usually means that the applicant needs to provide the IEC62133 test report of the lithium battery.
