The 11th session of the United Nations Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods and the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (9 December 2022) adopted a set of new amendments to the seventh revised edition of the Manual of Tests and Criteria (including the first amendment), and released the eighth revised edition of the Manual of Tests and Criteria on 27 November 2023.
In Chapter 38.3, the main changes in the new version are as follows:
1. Add the test clause of sodium ion battery;
2. The test requirements of the integrated battery pack are modified:
For an integrated battery pack that is not equipped with overcharge protection, if it is designed to be used only as an element of other batteries, equipment or vehicles that provide overcharge protection:
-Overcharge protection needs to be verified in other batteries, equipment or vehicles;
-The charging system without overcharge protection needs to be controlled by a physical system or program to prevent it from being used.
Comparison of test differences between sodium ion battery and lithium ion battery:
1. The sodium ion battery does not need T.8 forced discharge test;
2. For sodium ion batteries or sodium ion single-cell batteries, the batteries are in Wally state during T.6 extrusion/impact test.
Requirements for sample delivery of UN38.3 test standard for sodium battery:
◆ Single cell: 20
◆ Single-cell batteries: 18 batteries and 10 batteries.
◆ Small battery pack (≤12Kg): 16 batteries and 10 batteries.
◆ large battery pack (> >12Kg): 8 batteries and 10 batteries.
