The difference between Reach and RoHS

Author:中认联科 time:2020-08-24 Ctr:1088

Differentiating them from the concepts of RoHS certification and Reach certification

1. RoHS is a mandatory standard established by EU legislation. Its full name is the "Directive on Restricting the Use of Certain Hazardous Components in Electrical and Electronic Equipment." The standard has officially entered into force on July 1, 2006, and is mainly used to standardize the material and process standards of electrical and electronic products, making it more conducive to human health and environmental protection. The purpose of this standard is to eliminate six substances including lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers in electrical and electronic products, and emphasizes that the content of cadmium cannot exceed 0.01%.

2. Reach is the abbreviation of EU regulations "Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals", a chemical regulatory system established by the EU and implemented on June 1, 2007. The SVHC list tested by Reach is 173 items as of December 19, 2016. The new EU chemical policy, Reach certification (registration, evaluation and authorization of chemicals), aims to protect human health and the environment at a high level. Promote the innovation of green chemicals.

Different definition and scope of application

RoHS is a directive issued by the European Union, which needs to be implemented after the member states are transformed into regulations; and the Reach regulations come into effect directly after the promulgation. Reach is the framework and RoHS is the specific directive.

1. RoHS regulations are mainly for electronic and electrical products (then products can be tested according to customer needs), metal and ceramic materials are tested for 4 hazardous substances, and non-metallic tested for 6 hazardous substances! It is a mandatory regulation of the EU, that is, products sold in the EU market must pass the RoHS test!

2. The Reach regulations cover almost all products (except food and drugs), and are also the mandatory environmental protection regulations of the European Union, that is, related products are required to meet the Reach regulations in addition to the requirements of the RoHS regulations!

To distinguish between RoHS and Reach's actual inspection methods

1. RoHS generally directly conducts chemical analysis on homogeneous materials, or conducts chemical analysis on materials that exceed or are close to the limit after scanning with XRF scanning equipment. Generally, mixed testing of multiple materials is not accepted.

2. Reach due to the continuous increase of SVHC (substances of very high concern), as of June 16, 2020, the number of substances of high concern to be tested has increased to 209, so the cost of testing is very high. In this way, for finished products with a lot of materials, such as TV sets, a variety of materials can be grouped and mixed to test and report. This approach is currently accepted in the market.

Differentiate them from the reports and certificates issued by RoHS and Reach

1. RoHS has been included in the EU's compulsory certification CE, and generally only a test report is required. However, if the customer needs a certificate, a CE certificate can also be issued.

2. Reach only has test reports, not certificates.

Summary: RoHS and Reach are two different environmental protection regulations of the European Union, and their testing items, content and testing methods are different! In addition, Reach requires notification and registration (rarely required), while RoHS does not. Both RoHS and Reach are mandatory by the European Union. Related products sold to the EU need to meet both RoHS and Reach regulations.
