With the wide application of portable energy storage products, the frequent occurrence of safety accidents has attracted great attention from the market and regulators. In order to ensure consumer safety and enhance market trust, ANSI and SCC of Canada approved the safety standard UL 2743:2023 for mobile energy storage power supplies on April 14, 2023. This standard provides detailed requirements for the design, construction, testing and use of portable energy storage products, aiming to comprehensively improve the safety of portable power packs.
Portable energy storage product definition updated
The UL 2743:2023 standard first defines portable energy storage products. Portable energy storage products must be able to be moved by a single person without the aid of tools and not permanently connected to the power system. According to this standard, portable energy storage products are divided into handheld and mobile categories. Mobile, portable energy storage products must be designed to weigh no more than 18kg or have wheels for easy movement.
Structure requirement update
In terms of structure, the UL 2743:2023 standard specifies the fire rating of the plastic shell, the charging voltage of the vehicle, and the protection of the socket. For example, when the interior is metal or V-1, the fire rating of the plastic shell can be relaxed to HB. The onboard charging voltage is adjusted to a maximum of 24Vdc, and the socket protection is subject to UL 1012 requirements. In addition, the standard specifies the requirements for 120Vac/15A and 30A sockets, including double insulation and GFCI certification.
Scope of use and exceptions to UL 2743:2023
The standard clarifies the different requirements for outdoor, temporary outdoor and indoor use, and emphasizes the safety standards for power packs with specific functions such as emergency starting, lighting, inflation. It should be noted that the standard does not include the relevant parts of electric vehicle charging equipment.
Product compliance with UL 2743:2023 importance
The UL 2743:2023 update not only improves the safety of portable power packs, but also provides manufacturers with clear standard guidance to help them design and manufacture products that meet safety requirements. For manufacturers, compliance with this standard is key to entering the U.S. market and meeting consumer safety expectations.
